Uber den Künstler
Ernst Wilhelm Hindebrand was a German painter born in Heideblick, Germany in 1833. He was a student of Carl Steffeck, a German painter mostly known for his paintings of horses and dogs, in Berlin, where Hildebrand would decide to live. In 1875 he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. From there he moved to the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1880. He retired from teaching in 1885. Initially he focused on decorative painting but soon turned to genre scenes and later turned to portrait painting, making portraits of crown prince Friedrich the Third and several university professors. Later on, he mainly painted scenes from history and literature. He died in 1924 in Berlin.
