Akkeringa was born in the Dutch East Indies. In 1863 father Akkeringa died suddenly of typhus. After the death of his father, the young Akkeringa was sent to The Hague and stayed with family in the Netherlands, together with his brother and sister. The three children grew up in the household of an aunt. The rural surroundings of The Hague were a source of inspiration for him.

He is best known for his beach scenes with fishermen and children playing in the garden. Also known for conversing figures in a leafy environment.
