TEFAF is widely regarded as one of the, if not thé best art fair in the world. Held for the 30th time this year we visited the opening on Thursday. Here’s our top 5 reasons why you can’t miss out on this year’s anniversary edition.

  1. TEFAF welcomes 270 internationally renowned art dealers and galleries.
Together they represent all imaginable disciplines at the highest quality. TEFAF is not merely an art fair; it’s a museum where you can view all the objects without the constraint of velvet ropes. From ancient art to ‘hot’ contemporary names, TEFAF offers it all.

  1. As one of the leading art fairs in the world, TEFAF attracts a public to match its exhibitors. Before the opening of the art fair private jets touch down at Maastricht Airport and the parking garages are filled with exclusive cars with license plates from across Europe. TEFAF welcomes internationally acclaimed collectors, museum curators, popstars and tech-billionaires. These visitors not rarely dress the part and wander around as if they are objects of art themselves.

  1. There are few opportunities where you can learn as much about the art exhibited as at TEFAF. Art dealers and gallerists from around the globe are all more than happy to explain their collection and its provenance to you. At TEFAF you can learn about that rare Cézanne while standing right next to it. Up close and personal finds a whole new meaning here.

  1. Absorbing all this art makes you hungry. Luckily at TEFAF, the food is almost as good as the art. Seafood and Champagne bars, a full-service restaurant and different wine bars; the organisation has made sure its visitors have nothing to complain about. With the opportunity to wine and dine, TEFAF is a full day out and about.

  1. TEFAF is affordable. Of course, most of the objects on display are out of reach for us mortals. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring TEFAF back home with you. Scriptum Art offers the largest collection of art books and catalogues so even if you can’t afford the real painting, at least you can buy the book and look at a miniature version of the painting while reading about it. And of course you should bring the original TEFAF catalogue with you when you leave. A full-colour summary of the art you admired during the day.

L'Enfant Hussard Karel Appel

L'Enfant hussard - Karel Appel (1921-2006).

Finally, TEFAF is held in Maastricht, one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the Netherlands. Before and after visiting the fair, Maastricht welcomes you with open arms. Should you want to stay for dinner, try Le Bon Vivant. And if you’re too tired to drive home you can always indulge yourself in the luxury of the Kruisheren Hotel.
