About the artist

Adriaen Schoonebeek was a Dutch printmaker and publisher. He lived between 1661-1705. He was born in Rotterdam in 1661, moved to Amsterdam where he becae pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe between 1676-1679. Adriaen Schoonebeek was a Dutch printmaker and publisher. He lived between 1661-1705.

He was born in Rotterdam in 1661, moved to Amsterdam where he becae pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe between 1676-1679.

After that he studied in Leyden and by 1688 running his own print business in Amsterdam, seated in the Kalverstraat, Amsterdam (1688)

In 1698 sold up his business, and moved to Moscow to set up an engraving workshop for Peter the Great in the Kremlin armoury.

He died in 1705. His workshop continued under his nephew Pieter Pickaert who transferred it to St Petersburg in 1714 where it lasted until 1737.

The papers of Picaart and Schoonebeek were bought by the Crown and are now in the Hermitage.
