He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1908 and the Salon des Indépendants in 1909. He was one of the Modernists included in the Armory Show, New York in 1913. Between 1914 and 1918, he published multiple war drawings. He learned etching in 1919 and by the end of his life had produced some 1600 plates. His thickly painted oil paintings in sombre colours reflected his admiration for Courbet and Cézanne. His subjects include landscapes, still lives and nudes. He was prolific as a painter in oils and watercolour, and as a printmaker, until the very end of his life.
