About the artist

Arthur Briët was born on Java, he moved to the Netherlands with his mother after his father died when he was one year old. In the Netherlands he spent his childhood in Utrecht, here he also received drawing lessons from Jozef Hoevenaar. In 1884 he became a pupil of Alexandre Struys and Charles Verlat at the academy of Antwerp. In 1888 he moved to Paris to continue his studies, from here he travelled a lot to Italy to paint. After his stay in Paris he moved to Mechelen in Belgium, but he eventually moved back to the Netherlands.

His artworks are mostly portraits, landscapes and genre pieces. His work can be seen in Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, Centraal Museum in Utrecht, Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Singer Museum in Laren and several other museums. In 1937 he was appointed officer of the order of Oranje-Naussau. He died in 1939 at the age of seventy-two in Nunspeet.
