Ben Oldenhof

Biography

About the artist

After working as a ceramist at a young age in his native region, Ben Oldenhof studied ceramics at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam with his teacher Jan van der Vaart.
After graduating in 1981, he initially worked as a ceramist.
From 1986 he started experimenting with other materials, in the beginning in combination with clay.
After that he made metal sculptures, often monumental, with regular commissions for the public space.
He makes geometric hollow metal volumes and abstract or nature-inspired forms cut from metal plates, which are assembled into a three-dimensional object. These forms are created according to the process of the "écriture automatique" of the surrealists.

Since 2010, his assemblages have been added, made of many often residual materials.
Always assembled with metal wire. These assemblies are part of what is known as the art of recycling, a movement that uses objects discarded by society as the basis for new works of art.

His recent works are reliefs made up of glass fibres and pigments.
