About the artist

Bernardus Johannes Richters (Rotterdam, 27 March 1888 - Laren, 11 December 1966) was a dutch sculptor, graphic artist and draughtsman. Richter studied at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen in Rotterdam. He was apprenticed to Edema van der Tuuk, Alexander van Maasdijk en Rein Miedema. Until the First World War he lived in München, Vienna and Paris. Although his early work was inspired by expressionism, he later on developed a more symbolistic style. He was influenced by Mendes da Costa and Otto Freundlich. Richters made various designs of animals for ceramic sculptures.
