Charlotte Dorothee Baroness van Pallandt was born in Arnhem in 1898 and became one of the most important Dutch sculptors of the twentieth century. She came from a noble family and initially trained as a painter, but discovered her true calling in sculpture in the 1930s. After studying in Paris and lessons with Charles Despiau, among others, she developed her own recognizable style in which classical beauty and modern simplicity merge.

Van Pallandt eventually settled in Noordwijk, where she lived and worked until her death in 1997. Her oeuvre is characterized by a deeply felt figuration, with a distinct preference for the human form. She created numerous portraits, including those of literary and political figures, in which she captured not only outward likeness but also inner peace and dignity.

The most famous example of this is undoubtedly her statue of Queen Wilhelmina (1967), which stands in The Hague and is considered an icon of Dutch sculpture. This monument combines strength with restraint and exemplifies her approach: carefully constructed, clear in form, and with a monumental simplicity that makes the sculpture timeless.

Besides monumental works, Van Pallandt also created a large number of small bronze sculptures, often female nudes or torsos. These sculptures, with their sleek yet flowing forms, demonstrate her pursuit of pure proportions and an almost meditative tranquility.

Despite her noble background, she lived and worked modestly, dedicated to her craft and largely out of the spotlight. However, her artistry was widely recognized: she received important commissions, participated in prominent exhibitions, and was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1974.

Charlotte van Pallandt is considered a pioneer for female artists in the Netherlands. At a time when sculpture was still strongly male-dominated, she carved out a unique niche through dedication, talent, and an uncompromising artistic vision. Her sculptures, spread throughout the Netherlands and in museum collections, continue to bear witness to an artistic life that spanned almost a century and in which peace, strength and human dignity were central.
