About the artist

Edward Ives (1719 – 1786) was a surgeon of the British Royal Navy. From 1753 to 1757 he was the surgeon of the Kent, the flagship of Vice-Admiral Charles Watson, commander-in-chief in the East Indies. The squdron sailed via the Cape of Good Hope and Madagascar to India, where they visited the chief English settlements and major cities. When Watson died, Ives resigned his appointment and returned home overland (via Basra, Baghdad, Mosul, Aleppo, Cyprus, Livorno, Venice, Germany, Holland), arriving in England in 1759.
