Emile Belet was an Art Nouveau painter and designer, and is identified on the title page of Dictionnaire des Fleurs as painter at the National Porcelain Manufactory at Sevres, France’s leading manufacturer of fine ceramics and porcelain. This denotation supports the proposition that this folio (and like works) were intended in part for painters & designers of hand painted ceramics. Indeed, Belet painted some of the most opulent Art Nouveau Era naturalist inspired decorations on Sevres porcelain blanks when he was the chief painter there from 1876 to 1900.
