About the artist

Emmanuel Viérin was one of the most important Belgian luminists. In 1914 he fled to the Netherlands because of the outbreak of the First World War and settled on Walcheren.

He stayed in Oostkapelle and Domburg. The light on Walcheren fascinated him and this is reflected in his paintings that he made here. They are sunny paintings with a lot of attention for the effect of light, painted in a luministic style.

It shows a relationship with the paintings of Emile Claus (1849-1924). His subjects were the dunes, the beach, the sea and the picturesque villages on Walcheren such as Domburg and Zoutelande. In 1916 and 1917 he took part in the Domburg Exhibitions.

After the First World War he returned to Belgium. His work is represented in, among others, the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp and Brussels and museums in Bruges, Kortrijk and Mechelen.
