About the artist
Francine Schrikkema (born 1963, Usquert) is a Dutch contemporary painter whose work is characterized by a spontaneous, expressive, and powerful visual language. Based in the rural village of Huizinge in the province of Groningen, she draws inspiration from her immediate surroundings, translating impressions and emotions into bold compositions.
Her paintings often reveal an intuitive process in which gesture, color, and movement take precedence over strict form. Rather than working from fixed concepts, Schrikkema allows each piece to evolve organically, resulting in works that feel immediate and unrestrained. This approach lends her paintings a sense of energy and authenticity, inviting viewers to engage with the emotional undercurrent of the work.
Living and working in the open landscape of northern Netherlands has had a lasting influence on her practice. The quiet, expansive environment is subtly reflected in her use of space and rhythm, while her dynamic brushwork introduces a compelling tension between calm and intensity. Through this balance, Schrikkema has developed a distinctive voice within contemporary Dutch painting.
