Francois Pieter ter Meulen was a Dutch painter who was born in Bodegraven on 3 September 1843, he died on October 1927. He became renowned for his paintings of heathlands with sheep. He was also a draughtsman and aquarellist. He was apprenticed to Anton Mauve and Hendrikus and Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen. Ter Meulen himself taught painting to his nephew Jan Tiele. He lived and worked in Amsterdam, Bodegraven, The Hague, and Elspeet. He associated with the art societies Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae. From 1910 to 1914 he was chairman of Pulchri Studio. In 1910 he was honoured with a medal at the World’s fair in Brussels. His work can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, Teylers Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Haags Gemeentemuseum and Noord-Veluws Museum.
