About the artist

Frédéric Samuel Cordey was a French landscape painter who was part of the Impressionist movement. He was a close friend of Auguste Renoir. Cordey studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts with Isodore Pils and Gustave Boulanger as his teachers, but together with his friend Pierre Franc-Lamy revolted against their traditional painting teachings. He then began painting in the Impressionist style. He participated in the Salon d’automne from 1903 to 1908 and was named a member of the Salon in 1904, where he exhibited six of his paintings.
