About the artist

Gillis Cornelis van Oosten was born in Delft in 1916. He was an graphic artist, painter, watercolourist, draughtsman and sculptor. He attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He worked in line of the Academy with a brown palette and was known for his portraits, still lives and travel sketches. After he travelled in France his palette changed to brighter colors such as yellow, white, blue and green.
At the end of the fifties he starts to make abstract works instead of figurative. He becomes a teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and one of his pupils is Freerk Rempt. He dies after a long live in Delft in 2005.
