About the artist

Johan Alexander (Han) Boerrigter is a Dutch ceramic artist from Nijmegen. He spent most of his youth in Groningen but left at age eighteen to work in the petrochemical industry in Canada as an engineer. When he is asked to engineer a turntable for pottery, his interest in ceramics and pottery grew. In 1972, Boerrigter enrolled at the Pasadena Art College in California where he builds his first gas furnace. The glaze and process of glazing pottery becomes gradually more interesting for Boerrigter, expressing a specific interest in ancient Chinese and Japanese techniques. He worked with different temperatures, creating different kinds of ceramics.
Boerrigter has developed specific recipes for glazing after studying and analysing techniques used by the Chinese and Japanese.
