About the artist

Hanibal Srouji is a Lebanese painter who was born in Beirut in 1957. He fled to Canada due to the civil war that lasted from 1975 to 1990. He graduated with a master of fine arts from the Concordia University in Montreal in 1987. He holds different teaching posts in France, Canada, the United States, and he is also an assistant professor at the Lebanese American University. Since 2010, he has lived and worked in Beirut, Paris and France. Srouji creates colourful abstract paintings which draw inspiration from his own life and Libanon’s history. He is known for using a blow-torch in order to create small holes and lines. His paintings remind of bullet-marked walls in Beirut and may refer to the human emotions in the aftermath of the civil war. Srouji’s work can be found in different solo and group exhibitions in Lebanon, France, Switzerland, United States, Japan, Kuwait and Canada.
