Hendrik de Theodorus "Henk" de Court Onderwater was a Dutch painter, born in Dordrecht on 6 August 1877. He died in Dordrecht on 8 May 1905. De Court Onderwater began studying at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts in 1893. In 1896 he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. In 1891 he lived in Bruges (Belgium) but he soon returned to the Netherlands, where he worked in Heeze, Volendam, Houses and Dordrecht. Next, he settled in Laren and became part of the local artists’ colony. In this period he painted farm interiors, portraits and figures. In 1905, after visiting his family in Dordrecht, he committed suicide, only 27 years old. He was a member of the Amsterdam artist association Arti et Amicitiae and the Dordtse Teekengootschap Pictura. In 1904 he was awarded the Willink of Collenprijs. His work is included in the collections of the Dordrechts Museum and the Singer Museum.
