About the artist

Ives Maes (Hasselt, Belgium) is a multidisciplinary visual artist who lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. Since 2012 he holds a position as a PhD researcher at KASK, School of Arts in Ghent.

His work focuses on processes of recycling and the ruinous state of utopian architecture. This ideal is reflected in his three major projects.
Recyclable Refugee Camp (2004-2008): An ironic proposal for a biodegradable living unit.

The Future of Yesterday (2008-2012): In this fascinating collection Maes explores the architecture of world expos.
Sunville (2013): The photographic series is a personal quest into his memories around specific locations in his hometown. On another level this series concerning the physical, sculptural and architectural aspects of photography.
