Jan Baptists Verberckt I (1735-1819) was a Belgian silversmith who was born in Antwerpen. He was the son of silversmith Michiel Verberckt and Joanna Maria Buyssens. He was the son of silversmith Michiel Verberckt and Joanna Maria Buyssens. He studied at the academy between 1751-1754. In 1756 he visited his uncle, the sculptor Jacques Ver-berckt, in Paris. He was awarded a prize at the Antwerp academy in 1761, 1766 and 1767. Although he was in his father’s service, he signed the works himself. In 1767 he married Sa-ra Maria Gillekens (Gielkens). He was appointed master in 1771 and took over his father’s workshop in 1775. Verbeckt was also a professor at the academy. He became master in 1794 and member of the board in 1803. His son Jan Baptist II Verbeckt (1774-1838) took over the workshop in 1811. He died in 1819.
