About the artist

Jan Simon Knikker Jr. was born in 1911, in the Dutch city of Leiden.

His living and working area mainly centered around the Dutch cities of Wassenaar, Voorschoten and The Hague, all of which were close to his hometown of Leiden.

Jan Simon Knikker studied from 1928 to 1932 at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague, where he focused on figurative landscapes and cityscapes. His work is generally regarded as the 'Hague School'.

Jan Simon Knikker Jr. also painted on behalf of the art dealers. He often worked together with his father, Jan Simon Knikker Sr.

Initially, they struggled to sell their paintings. But these problems resolved in later years and Simon Knikker Jr. had many professional assignments in the following years, although he never held a single exhibition.

In his later years he enjoyed life to the fullest with a drink and a cigar in hand. Knikker eventually died in 1990, at the age of 79.
