About the artist
Jan van Essen lived and worked in Amsterdam, Arnhem, The Hague and Scherpenzeel. He was a pupil of P.F. Greive and H. Valkenburg. He mostly painted landscapes, portraits and genre scenes, but after 1885 most of the times animal scenes.
