He was a painter of landscapes, mainly forest landscapes and winter landscapes, in the Romantic style, often with gnarled oak trees, ruins and dramatic skies catching the eye. From 1841 on, he was a pupil of B.C. Koekkoek, a Dutch Romantic landscape painter, at the Academy of Fine Arts established by Koekkoek in Kleve. He worked together with E.J. Verboeckhoven, a Belgian Romantic painter specialised in landscape scenes with cattle, several times. This resulted in paintings, signed by both, of landscapes with people and animals. Between 1843 and 1856 he has had exhibitions in among others, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Brussels and Berlin. After the death of Koekkoek in 1862, Klombeck succeeded him as head of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kleve. Klombeck died in 1893 in Kleef.
