About the artist

Johannes Ludovicus Joseph Marie was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He went to the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Antwerp, Belgium and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (National Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam. He lived and worked in France for a big part of his life. He was greatly influenced by Van Gogh, Gauguin and Matisse. In France, he developed into a colourist, learning about light and colours. His painted landscapes, cityscapes, harbour views and the peasantry in Expressionist, Impressionist and Pointilliste styles. Besides France, he lived and worked in Antwerp, Amsterdam and Bergen op Zoom. He was a member of the artist association De Onafhankelijken.
