About the artist
Michiel Esselbeeck was a German silversmith who was born in Augsburg in 1611, he died in Amsterdam in 1671. Esselbeeck became a master of the Amsterdam silversmith’s guild in 1642. He revealed himself as a very talented master in his workshop at the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam. Esselbeeck received important commissions from diplomats, merchants and the clergy. His work often shows traces of his German origin, especially in the gilt chased and cast ornaments. He worked with skilful craftsmen from Germany. His work is included in various public collections, including National Museum Copenhagen, Museum Kremlin Moscow, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Catharijneconvent Utrecht and Gemeentemuseum Deventer.
