About the artist
Nicolaes Molenaer, also known by his first name 'Claes' or 'Klaes' (Haarlem, c. 1628 - there, 1676) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman. He made landscapes, seascapes and genre pieces. Possibly he was a pupil of Salomon van Ruysdael. His work shows influences of Jan van Goyen and later Jacob van Ruisdael.
He would have been a brother of the painters Bartholomeus Molenaer and Jan Miense Molenaer. Other sources indicate that he was a nephew of the latter. He worked all his life in Haarlem, where he became a member of the local St Luke's Guild in 1651. His earliest work dates from 1644.
Molenaer was buried in the Grote or St Bavo church on 31 December 1676.
