About the artist
Rembrandt Bugatti was a Milanese sculptor who is currently best known for his bronze sculptures of animals. Bugatti's father was an important Art Nouveau designer, causing Rembrandt to grow up in an artistic environment. His family moved to Paris in 1902 to live in an artistic cummunity.
Family friend and Russian sculptor Prince Paolo Troubetzkoy encouraged Rembrandt to make sculptures when he was a child. As he grew older, he produced his first bronze statues which were soon exhibited.
Bugatti loved nature and spent a large amount of time at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris or at the Antwerp Zoo to study exotic animals. His sculptures of exotic animals remain the most popular of his works.
During the First World War, he volunteered for paramedical work at a military hospital in Antwerp, which led to depression. At the same time the Antwerp Zoo was forced to kill their animals, which affected Bugatti as well. In 1916, at the age of 31, he killed himself. His art works are now also highly valued and can be seen in multiple museums, such as Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
