About the artist

Rémy Cogghe was a Belgian painter from Mouscron who lived in France during his lifetime. Cogghe took his first art lessons at a local Academy in Roubaix. In 1876, he would start with his studies at the École des Beaux-arts.

Four years later, he would already be a candidate for the prestigious Prix de Rome. When they discovered he had a Belgian nationality, he applied for the Prix de Rome from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He received a gold medal for his work.

The following five years, Cogghe travelled throughSpain,Italy, Algeria and Tunisia and became increasingly more successful. He painted portraits, and scenes from daily life. Between 1879 and 1926, Cogghe exhibited almost thirty times in the Salon. He died in 1935.
