About the artist

Post-expressionist painter, draughtsman and graphic artist, related to Pop Art, of which he is a precursor. He has been working in this direction since 1952. Also creates ceramics and art objects.

Studied at the Academies of Deinze (1937-40, H. Malfait) and Ghent (1941-45, J. Verdegem). Studies in ceramics at the Academy of Ghent (1954) and in Italy (1962). Paints frescoes in the cellars of Beervelde Castle (1966-67). Teacher at the Academy of Deinze (1960-73). Mentioned JPB (1958 and 60) and European Prize for Painting (Ostend, 1962).

From 1948 onwards, develops a very personal style and builds up a new plastic language from a new perception of the objects in his environment. He strives for an intense interaction between the painting and the viewer.

Represented our country in 1968 at the Venice Biönnale and at Documenta Kassel. Elevated to the peerage in 1994. Work in the Merode metro station in Brussels. A Raveel Museum (architect: S. Beel) in his native village is opened in 1999. Work in the Museums of Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, Liège, Ostend, as well as in numerous Museums in the Netherlands.
