Waldemar Otto was born in Poland in 1929. In 1945 he became a World War II refugee, when he left for Halle, Germany, with his parents. In 1948 Otto began his studies to become a sculptor at the University of Arts in Berlin. In 1952 he graduated with flying colours under Alexander Gonda. His first great achievement in his working field happened in 1957, when he was awarded with 'der Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung'.

In 1961 his first Torsi, which later became the trademark for his working style, were created. In 1973 Otto became a professor at 'de Hochschule für Künste' Bremen, Germany.

Otto depicts the human body in his work. He has become so advanced at this, that he doesn't need to use any measurement to execute his sculptures. Although he makes correct use of anatomy, he designs his work without a model. He purely focuses on fantasy and his creative inspiration.
