About the artwork
A corner cupboard
Mahogany veneered
H. 245 cm x w. 150 cm x d. 100 cm.
Holland, 18th century, Louis XV
A moulded cornice with three rocaille carved ornaments above two waved doors, opening to reveal an interior of three shelves and three drawers, the lower doors enclose a further shelve and drawer. The middle part with flat sliding shelve. On claw feet and decorated with an applied scrolling band of foliage and flowers, gilt bronze mounts.
These large corner buffets, about the same height as cabinets, were originally used as a kind of serving cabinet in the dining room. The shelves probably held glassware and silver objects and a cooler would have stood on the cupboard floor.
