- About the artwork13-cm enamel convex dial with Roman numerals, finely foliate pierced and engraved hands and alarm disc, spring driven movement with verge escapement and silk suspended pendulum of 3 1/2 day duration, pull wind alarm on a bell, case with dome top throughout with tortoiseshell imitation, moulded break arch door, glass panels to the front and sides, moulded plinth, suspended by two suspension hoops.
This little clock was made in the tradition of the French ‘religieuses’, so-called for their precision being the first French pendulum clocks. ‘Religieuse’ means besides ‘religious’ also ‘precise’. It was used as a bedroom clock, because it doesn’t strike but has an alarm only. The tortoiseshell imitation might be a little provincial but the finely pierced hands and well made movement shows high quality work. - About the artist
