  • About the artwork

"De Haven van Amsterdam - Le port de Amsterdam", copper engraving made by Matthias de Sallieth after a drawing by Dirk de Jong from 1780, for the "Atlas van de zeehavens der Bataafsche Republiek" by Pieter Yver, J. Smit & Zn. and F.W. Greebe, published by Johannes Allart in 1802. Later hand-coloured. Dim. (rim): 28.1 x 39.4 cm. View of the IJ with Amsterdam on the horizon. In the foreground on the left a large wooden raft being steamed on by four men. In the centre the mirror return ship "Holland" is being towed into the harbour. The ship lies at anchor in a ship's hold and a large number of men are working on the pivots to lower the ship back into the water. Ships, heavily laden with merchandise, could sometimes not easily pass the shallows of Pampus. The Zuiderzee knew the working of tides, with ship camels ships could be pulled through the shallows at high tide. Price: Euro 650,-
