    The merchant and painter Simon van Brakel (1816-1884) was a member of the artistsociety Pictura and belonged to the School of Dordrecht, dominated by the painter J.C. Schotel. As a painter Simon was taught by his father Gerrit van Brakel, also a merchant as well as a painter of seascapes and member of Pictura as well. Oil on panel, signed.
  • About the artist

    Simon van Brakel was a painter of Dutch origin, born December 24st, 1816 in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. He was known as both a merchant and a painter. Favoured subjects of his hand include seascapes, ships and river views. In 1869 van Brakels work was exhibited in the Exposition générale des Beaux Arts. Van Brakel lived in the city of Dordrecht all his life and died on the 5th of February, 1884.
