  • About the artwork
Fragments on the theory and practice of landscape gardening. Including some remarks on Grecian and Gothic architecture, collected from various manuscripts, in the possession of the different noblemen and gentlemen, for whose use they were originally written ...
London, printed by T. Bensley and Son for J. Taylor, 1816. Large 4to (36 x 29 cm). With 43 full-page mostly hand-coloured aquatint plates, some with movable overlays, 9 aquatints in text and 15 wood-engraved illustrations and figures in text. Contemporary red half morocco, uncut.

Beautifully illustrated treatise on landscape gardening by Humphry Repton, illustrated with many finely coloured plates showing English houses with gardens laid out by the author. The manuscripts used and referred to on the title-page and also in the preface were the author's own note-books with descriptive proposals for the improvement of over 200 estates. These so-called 'Red Books' were also used by the author for his earlier works. Since many of his 'Red Books' are no longer extant the present work is an important source for the history of English landscape design.
Further essays discuss styles, materials, and principles of landscape gardening, such as symmetry, unity of character, outline, colour, combination and contracts, aspects and prospects, and variety. Special attention is also given to water, fences, windows, interiors, rural architecture in general, castles, villages, lodges, cottages, and the "luxuries of a garden".
Fine copy with wide margins, uncut.
