About the Artist

Kayoko Hoshino was born in Japan in 1949.

She makes intriguing vases: austere forms of grey-brown or black clay embellished with subtle linear decorations. She also makes boxes comprising a pair that together, show a continuous movement in decoration and form. The exterior of the work is reminiscent of delicate Japanese paper or finely pleated textiles. The work of Kayoko Hoshino; bowls, dishes and boxes, is made of dark clay.

The inside of the objects is rugged and powerful, the cuts on the outside are sophisticated and refined. Although her work always implies function, it is to a high degree independent of utility and would be used by its owner only with a measure of diffidence. They are fascinating vases, bowls, mugs and boxes, austere forms made of grey-brown or black clay embellished with subtle linear decorations.

Immediately after the introduction of the work of Kayoko Hoshino in the Netherlands through Galerie Carla Koch, there formed a large and still growing group of admirers of her work.
