About the Artist

Pieter Stortenbeker (1828, The Hague – 1898, The Hague) was a Dutch painter, aquarellist and engraver of The Hague School. He applied himself to genre painting, landscapes, animal painting and townscapes. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He was apprenticed to Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen, to his brother Johannes Stortenbeker and to Jan Bedijs Tom. Louis Apol and Willem Maris were among his pupils. Stortenbeker is a celebrated artist of The Hague School. He was a member of Pulchri Studio. His work belongs to the collections of the Rijksmuseum, the Haags Gemeentemuseum, and Paleis Het Loo. He was awarded a Golden Medal at a special exhibition in The Hague in 1861. His brother Cornelis was a painter too.
