About the ArtistJohan Mari ten Kate, also known as Mari ten Kate was born in 1831 in The Hague. His brother Herman Frederik ten Kate taught him painting at a young age. Later he attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Ten Kate painted romantic subjects such as playing children in the dunes, at sea or on the ice. He loved the simplicity of farmers and fisherman en their children inspired him.
His work is not representative for the reality in the 19th century, because the lives of the people he painted was hard and miserable. He was the teacher of his son Johannes Marius ten Kate and Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de Ranitz. Ten Kate died in Driebergen in 1910.
