About the Artist

Martin Sijbesma is a contemporary Dutch painter, born in 1968 in Hartwerd (Friesland, the Netherlands). After completing highschool, Sijbesma entered the field of painting as an autodidact. In 1986, he consciously decided to become a painter. Thus, he started with an initial interest in 17th and 18th century realism. His works tend to have a warm, welcome, romantic and silent impact, through their colour and composition. Sijbesma is specialized in still lifes, frequently incorporating antiques, vegetables and fruit. He also enjoys painting interior details of old buildings, and cars. He almost exclusively uses a glazed, multi-layered painting technique, and always works on wooden panel. Since 1989 Sijbesma has been living in Kûbaard, in a renovated church. His studio is located in this same building.
