    Als kunstenaar ben ik altijd vanuit het existentiële begonnen aan zoiets fragiels als een schilderij: een lap linnen gespannen op vier latten, witgegrond, waar de tijd nog geen vat op heeft. Maar wanneer de vonk oversprong en de idee, die zwenkende vlucht spreeuwen, neerstreek, werden penseel en paletmes in trance gehanteerd. Chaotische verfmassa’s bleken intuïtief doordrenkt van licht, kleur en vorm. Zo bereikte ik mijn werkelijkheid van het klassieke naakt, het freudiaanse stilleven, het romantische landschap en het als nieuw gecomponeerde interieur. De dood hield zich weer even koest. Schilderen is afzien, niet miskleunen tijdens de reuzenzwaai aan de rekstok en de afsprong voor lief nemen. Pas ademen wanneer het maagdelijk woud voor andere ogen zichtbaar is gemaakt.

  • About the artist

    Paul Hugo ten Hoopen was born in Doetinchem, The Netherlands, in 1927. Ten Hoopen is a painter, draftsman, watercolourist and essayist. He was educated at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and the Schule des Sehens - Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg as well. During the years of 1969-1992, ten Hoopen was a professor at the National Acadamy of Art in Amsterdam himself. Currentyl, he is a member of the Dutch Watercolourist Circle, The Keerkring, and Arti and Amicitiae.

    From ca. 1960 onwards, Ten Hoopen has held countless solo- and group exhibitions. He has won a trio of awards as wel: the Kokoschka Award in Salzburg in 1958; the Grant for Travel of the Ministry of O. K. & W in 1965; the Jeanne Bieruma-Oosting Award for figurative painting in 1986.

    His work kan be admired in museums such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Henriëtte Polak Zutphen, Het Rijk, in areas surrounding Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Venlo and Zeist, and in the ABN-Amro Bank building. His work can be seen in multiple private collections in the Netherlands and abroad as well.
