  • About the artwork
Oil painting on panel by Adrianus Eversen, depicting a Dutch street scene. As early as the 19th century, Eversen was admired for the distinctly Dutch atmosphere he managed to evoke in his work. As a member of Arti et Amicitiae, he belonged to the artistic elite of his time.

Eversen was a contemporary and equal of Cornelis Springer; both were pupils of Hendricus Gerrit ten Cate and specialized in paintings of Old Dutch cityscapes. However, Eversen allowed himself greater freedom in his choice of subject matter. He often painted imaginary townscapes, composed of both existing and fantastical elements.

  • About the artist

Adrianus Eversen was a prominent 19th-century Dutch painter, best known for his romantic and atmospheric cityscapes of old Dutch towns. Born in Amsterdam in 1818, he developed into a master of depicting historical street scenes, canals, marketplaces, and sun-drenched squares, often populated by elegantly dressed figures and lively scenes from daily life.

Eversen was one of the most skilled pupils of the renowned painter Cornelis Springer, from whom he adopted refined perspective and a love for historical architecture. Nevertheless, he developed his own signature: where Springer often painted accurate existing locations, Eversen regularly combined elements from various cities into idealized compositions. As a result, his works acquired an almost timeless, nostalgic atmosphere that perfectly aligned with the romantic interest in the Dutch past.

His paintings are characterized by warm lighting, meticulous architectural details, and a strong sense of atmosphere. Eversen managed to capture the reflection of light on wet cobblestones, brick facades, and rippling water with great precision. In doing so, he created not only cityscapes but also a romanticized image of the old Netherlands, in which tranquility, order, and historical charm take center stage.

Throughout his career, Eversen enjoyed great success, both in the Netherlands and internationally. His work was beloved by collectors for its combination of technical refinement and accessible beauty. Today, his paintings are still appreciated as important examples of 19th-century Dutch romantic cityscapes.
