- About the artist
Jan Kagie, Johannes Leonardus Kagie in full, was born on October 2, 1907, in The Hague and died on December 31, 1991, in Amsterdam. He was a Dutch painter and draftsman who occupied a unique, independent position within twentieth-century Dutch art.
Jan Kagie was self-taught. His artistic development took place largely outside academic frameworks, focusing on personal observation, study, and experience. The twelve years he lived and worked in Rolde, Drenthe, from 1937 to 1949, were crucial to his development as a painter. During this period, he immersed himself deeply in the landscape and rural life, which had a lasting influence on his themes and visual language.
Kagie's work is characterized by a strong artistic foundation, a simple yet thoughtful composition, and an attentive approach to form and atmosphere. His paintings and drawings demonstrate tranquility, concentration, and a precise observation of people and their surroundings. After his period in Drenthe, he settled in Amsterdam, where he further expanded his oeuvre.
