  • About the artwork
FIRST AMERICAN OVERVIEW OF THE WORLD'S MARITIME NATIONS "Johnson's New Chart of National Emblems." Steel engraving published in New York by Alvin Jewett Johnson in 1868 as part of the Family Atlas. With original hand colouring. Size: 46,2 x 67,5 cm. Although common in Europe, especially among English publishers, Johnson was the first American mapmaker to include an outline of national flags and emblems in an atlas. Extremely practical in port cities such as New York and Boston, where naval and merchant ships from all over the world docked. The print also contains a number of 19th century novelties including the American Jack (the blue flag with only stars), the Belgian flag (used since 1831), the flags of Central America and San Salvador, the flag of Siam, the Civil Ensign of the Isle of Man and various Prussian flags. The flag of the British East India Company (used until 1858) is still on it, the flag of the Dutch East India Company (used until 1800) is no longer on it. Price: Euro 650,-
