The Belgian artist Madeleine van der Knoop has found a delicate balance between naturalism and expression. There is a stunning likeness in her polychrome bronzes of various ornithological species. It is immediately obvious that a careful study of birdlife lies at the core of her oeuvre. It is followed by a meticulous and time-consuming process of modelling and interpretation. The result is very much in line with the best examples of the 'Animalier' tradition, but Madeleine van der Knoop is not after a place in line. She may be part of a tradition but she also extends the discipline to a contemporary form. Her work is unmistakably personal, not just because of the skilfulness, but much more because her birds distinguish themselves by linking to art and nature at the same time.
