This bronze statue is charcteristic of Wortelboer's control of fine art. The bronze heart in the centre of the statue alongside a figurative display is not only playful, it allows the viewer a new impression from whatever angle the sculpture is approached. It says, "well, what have we here..." with a wink of the eye.

Jozephine Wortelboer is a Dutch sculptor of birds. She knew from an early age that she wanted to be a sculptress and went to the Art Academy Minerva in Groningen from 1973 to 1979. She works with heavy bronze but captures the light tenderness of birds by using inner space in her work, amongst other things. The birds can fly away at any moment because of their openness. Every sculpture has a different texture, because every bird is different. After the sculptures have been cast they are reworked and given a colour by using a burner and acid. These colours have become her speciality; they give the sculptures a lively expression.
