  • About the artist

Edzard Willem Koning (Winschoten, 1869 - The Hague, 1954) was a Dutch painter, watercolourist, etcher and illustrator. He was a grandson of Arnold Hendrik Koning (1784-1850).

After his education at the academy in The Hague, Koning made several trips, including to Paris and Normandy in 1891/92. Koning exhibited his work in 1907 in the building of the Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura in Groningen.

He is best known for his contribution to the Verkade albums and his lithographs for Van Eeden's De kleine Johannes. He is considered a follower of the Hague School. He also lived and worked a lot in Nunspeet, where a park is named after him.

Koning was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, Pulchri Studio, the Hague Art Circle, Painting and Drawing Society Harderwijk and St. Lucas (Amsterdam). Koning's work is owned by the Kröller-Müller Museum.
