This is a portrait of a woman, a shy Frisian girl who grew to be an internationally known model, leaving her mark on contemporary figurative art. Geke Hankel posed for famous artists like Matthijs Röling, Wout Muller and the photographer Erwin Olaf. Röling has worked with her for over forty years. In the nineteen sixties she moved in the circles of the rich and famous in the art world. She also played a part in one of Fellini's films. Her much discussed buttocks decorate one of the walls of Museum Buitenplaats in Eelde. And still, many art students at the Groningen Academy paint her portrait, often colourful nudes. Svetlana portrayed her respectfully, dressed like a majestic tsarina in a coat and fur hat, to honour her.
