    HAARLEM IN HAAR MAGERE JAREN Staalgravure vervaardigd door W.C. van Baarsel naar het ontwerp van de Haarlemse landmeter Ferdinand Joseph Nautz (1785-1841). Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. ca. 65,5 x 97,5 cm. Kadasterkaarten uit deze tijd werd gemaakt als basis voor het heffen van belastingen. De kaart van Haarlem werd echter rond 1827 ook los uitgegeven en voor fl. 3,- verkocht als stadsplattegrond voor reizigers. Haarlem is aan het begin van de 19de eeuw in een diep gat terecht gekomen. Aan de randen van de stad heeft een grote kaalslag plaatsgevonden. Tussen de Voldergracht en de stadssingel is bijna alle bebouwing verdwenen. Ook aan de overzijde van het Spaarne lijkt de stad op een gebit vol gaten. Een belangrijke oorzaak van de verval was de dramatische achteruitgang van de textielnijverheid en bierbrouwerij, al eeuwen de belangrijkste pijlers waarop de Haarlemse economie rustte. "Straten waarin voormaals gelukkige huisgezinnen door den arbeid een eerlijk bestaan vonden, zijn geheel afgebroken en in groene velden herschapen. In alle straten, alwaar voorheen geklepper der touwen en het vrolijk lied der arbeid gehoord werd, heeft thans doodsche stilte de levendigheid vervangen", aldus C. de Koning in 1807/1808 in zijn vierdelige werk over de geschiedenis van Haarlem. Ons land kon de concurrentie met Engeland niet bijbenen. Daar werden inmiddels dankzij de invoering van de stoommachine, tegen lage kosten grote hoeveelheden textiel geproduceerd.
