- About the artist
Henry Schouten, also known as Henri Schouten, was born in Paris in 1860 and died in Brussels in 1927. He was a Belgian painter known primarily for his animal and landscape paintings. In some cases, he worked under the pseudonym Joseph Klaas.
Schouten trained at the Brussels Academy from 1876 to 1881. During his studies and further artistic development, he was strongly influenced by the renowned animal painter Alfred Verwee, which had a lasting impact on his subject matter and style.
His oeuvre focuses primarily on rural scenes featuring livestock. Cows and horses often form the centerpiece of his compositions, but dogs and poultry also gradually became part of his repertoire. Schouten captured animals with great attention to character, posture, and movement, always in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
Thanks to this specialization, Henry Schouten became a valued representative of the Belgian tradition of animal and landscape painting. His work is loved by collectors and is in private collections.
